Week of February 3rd
Mon - Beginning "Ferris Wheel Design" - this project is an important foundation for learning about trigonometric functions and graphing trig functions. In teams, brainstorm Ferris Wheel physics as you plan how to build a Ferris Wheel that will make passengers travel in a circular motion. You must either use a motor or a crank and use at least 2 gears or pulleys. The goal is to have this Ferris Wheel turn 10 times at a constant speed without letting go of whatever is turning the wheel.
Tues - When your plan, sketch, and materials list is ready, I will sign off on it so you can get to building!
Wed - Building tips - build from the center out so that your measures can stay in symmetry and circular. Add pictures, details of process to Trello board every day!
Thurs - Gear ratios mini-lab (--use last page) use concepts of gear ratios to help in your planning of how to use them in the Ferris Wheel
Fri - Build day, continue progress on building your Ferris Wheel
Week of February 10th
Mon - Determine how fast MY Ferris wheel will turn in the counterclockwise direction and the clockwise direction. Add "Materials" list to Trello with diameter of your wheel, how high the passenger is sitting off the table, and how high the axle is above the table (centimeters.) Also include in the Materials list how much of each type of material you used in building your Ferris wheel.

It is a log/record of your changes & observations in trying to make the car go faster and have more power to climb the ramp. Research pulley and gear ratios and explain how the research relates to your changes on your car.
Thurs - Trig Skills Check #2, you can work on your car quietly while others finish the assessment, or you can work on the Weekly Review 3 on notebook paper.
Fri - Weekly Review 3 handed out and collected today. Get a head start earlier in the week if you aren't sure you can complete the 10 problems in one class. It's on the Weekly Reviews page.
Week of September 9th
Mon - Electric Race Car final day of design for Speed & Power set ups, final Trello updates (and organize it to give me a clear picture of what you tested and reflected on as you made changes.)
Tues - Finalize design for power and design for speed, including final testing data on your Trello board!
Wed - COMPETITION DAY!
Thurs - Go to Google Classroom to complete the Electric Car Reflection questions. Take your time and be thoughtful in answering. Get started early, but needs to be turned in Thursday! Trello board due Friday!
Fri - We are in need of 2-liter bottles next week for our next design project. Ask around to family, neighbors, friends, and businesses to see what you can find! Each team will need at least 2 bottles. We updated INB (interactive notebooks) with some fold-able cutouts and trig topics.
Week of September 16th
Mon - We took measurements of eye height, distance to 4 objects and their respective angle of elevation to see the top of the object: flag pole, light pole, 3rd tree to the east of the office, and east wing of the building. Tonight's homework: do one of the 4 calculations to determine the height. We will finish the rest after we check the first in class tomorrow.
Tues - NEED MORE 2-LITER BOTTLES! Finished the other height calculations.
Wed - Assessment on finding the height of a tall structure using trig. Start Water Bottle Rocket Design Challenge - Launch 1 on Friday so today is a brainstorming & select a design day.
Thurs - Build day - only one day to build the rocket!
Fri - Launch day 1, be ready to video record your launch and time all other launches. Weekly Review 4 due!
Week of September 23rd
Mon - NO SCHOOL
Tues - We will re-launch 2nd & 3rd hour rockets today due to the issue with the bike pump Friday. This means you will only have 1 day or 1.5 days to redesign.
Wed - Redesign day 2
Thurs - Final launch!!
Fri - Work day on calculators for finding the maximum height of each rocket launched, calculations turned in. Reflection in Google Classroom should be completed in class today, on your own. We will also disassemble and reuse what we can of the rocket bottles and parts, recycling the rest.
August 2019 - also check Google classroom for assignments
Week of August 12th

Thurs - Make sure to bring an 80+ page composition style notebook for class next week. We will set up the notebook in a particular format for taking notes, creating a resource since we do not use a textbook.
Fri - First Day of School! Ruler Activity to be completed in groups of 3. Let's see how you collaborate. Assignment: Read Teacher Promises & Student Expectations this weekend. Have your 80+ page composition notebook ready on Monday. Join Google classroom!
Week of August 19th
Mon - Set up your Interactive Note Book (INB)
Tues - Hurricane Design Challenge started with initial build of a tower structure to hold a tennis ball high off a table without tipping over when set 40 cm in front of a box fan.
Wed - Team build time 10-15 minutes, whole class observation of each team's structure. 30 sec on low, 30 sec on med, 30 sec plus on high with a max total time 2 min 30 sec in front of the fan without sliding or tipping over. THEN we discussed the power of the Engineering Design Process. Write down your team's data & observations of the tower's performance, then use class time today/Thursday to redesign and test again.
Thurs - Discussed team work strategies & expectations. Used 15 min of class time to redesign, test, refine, repeat. Once your tower is stable, test whether you can get the tennis ball to sit any higher. Weekly Review 1 due Friday.
Fri - Weekly Review 1 due Hurricane Design Challenge: Reflection link
Create a Trello account (use your student gmail), join the class period team in Trello while we are still in class, and complete the Trello Assignment before Monday.
Week of August 26th
Mon - Build an Electric Car. Teams will start a Trello board for the racecar using the number and letter written on their box top. Weekly Review #2 is on the Weekly Reviews page, and a paper copy will be available Tuesday.
Tues - Finish building your car, add comments and pictures to Trello board. What is your team role?
Wed - Catch-up day: handed back Weekly Review 1 and Pre-Test, Trig Skills Check 1. We reviewed Trig, and students are to go to Google Classroom's Khan academy link to practice and review more on their own as needed. Weekly Review 2 is due Friday.
Thurs - Completed car - test to see what it can do before you redesign! Record 3 trials of speed testing at 10 meters. Record 3 trials of power climb up the ramp set up in the corner of the room. Results should go in your notebook pg 15 and in your Trello board for the car. Research pulleys and gears to help in planning your redesigned car. Create two new lists on the board, "Speed Design" and "Power Design". Include notes about what you are trying and how it is working.
Fri - Weekly Review 2 due today. Redesign time today, Tuesday, Wednesday.
...September starts next week. We will continue redesign efforts on Tuesday & Wednesday. Thursday will be the next Trig Skills Check along with time to redesign, Friday will be a class period to complete the Weekly Review 3 on your own. So the review will be given out and collected in the same class. Car competition will start Monday 9/9, so make sure your team has their best power set up and best speed set up figured out.
